What do you do after a diagnosis of telogen effluvium? Telogen effluvium is the most common cause of diffuse hair loss. This hair loss usually occurs 3-4 months after a triggering event. Though the condition isn’t fully understood, telogen effluvium is best defined by its scattered presentation and its eventual reversal. Telogen effluvium appears as a diffuse thinning all over the scalp, although certain areas can lose more hair than others. The crown of the head, for instance, tends to lose slightly more hair than the sides or the back of the scalp.
To understand telogen effluvium, it’s best to first have a working idea of how a “normal” head of hair works. The average person has 120,000 to 150,000 strands of hair on his or her head and sheds an average of 100 hairs each day. These hairs are shed following a resting period of three to four months, which begins after the several-years-long growth cycle is complete. At any given time, different hairs are in different stages of the growth cycle. But, if you suffer from telogen effluvium, a disproportionate number of hair follicles shift suddenly into the resting stage. This usually results in the shedding of a large number of hairs within a short period of time.
Common Causes:
The treatment for telogen effluvium depends on the cause. Most cases of telogen effluvium, if addressed early, can be turned around sooner than later with aggressive treatment. Aggressive and persistent cases may respond well to treatment. Early diagnosis can help slow the shed along with speeding up the growth of new hair.
